************************** PBFIX.BAT Documentation *************************
Version 2.7.95a
Thank you for choosing PACKARD BELL as the system to meet your computing needs!
This computer system has a C:\PBTOOLS\BACKUP sub-directory on the hard disk
drive containing important original software configuration files. These files
enable you to restore the original software configuration of the system should
it become necessary to do so.
If you wish to restore the original software configuration for a particular
software program (i.e. WINDOWS), it is important that the software is installed
on the hard disk drive BEFORE using the PBFIX.BAT utility.
If you have any questions regarding the use of this utility, please contact:
PACKARD BELL Technical Support
(801) 579-0161 Software Support
(800) 733-4411 Hardware Support
(801) 579-3040 Customer Service
PACKARD BELL Technical Support Bulletin Board System
(801) 250-1600 Modem Settings = 9600,8,N,1
The PBFIX.BAT file restores the original hard drive software configuration
for a particular application software (or the entire hard disk drive). This
file should ONLY be used if you want to reset the software configuration to the
factory defaults. If for any reason you have re-installed any of the software
on this system, you should use the PBFIX utility to restore the factory
defaults. This batch file will restore the original configuration for the
following programs (only if they were included with the system when it was
originally purchased). The following parameters are valid (i.e. PBFIX
WINDOWS):
WINDOWS ( restores *.INI, *.GRP, and printer device drivers )
ROOT ( CONFIG.SYS, AUTOEXEC.BAT, etc. )
PRODIGY ( Windows icon and PIF only )
DISKIMAG ( The Disk Image program .INI file and VB DLL only )
PBNAV ( PB Navigator .INI file only )
ALL ( all of the above )
**** PBFIX WINDOWS ****
The WINDOWS option will restore the original *.INI files, *.GRP files, and the
printer drivers, shipped with the system if MS-Windows was included with the
system. Before this option copies the *.INI and *.GRP files from the
C:\PBTOOLS\BACKUP sub-directory to the C:\WINDOWS sub-directory, it will rename
the existing *.INI files to *.FXI and the existing *.GRP files to *.FXG.
Since the existing *.INI and *.GRP files are renamed, it is possible to
restore the WINDOWS configuration you had before you used the PBFIX utility.
If you did not wish to change the WINDOWS configuration you may restore your
configuration by following the steps below:
1) Type, CD\WINDOWS [ENTER] (Words in brackets represent a key to press)
2) Type, DIR *.FX? [ENTER]
If the files with an *.FXI and *.FXG extension exist, then continue.
For this next step you will need to be careful not to delete any file that was
not changed. Write down or print out the directory listing from the previous
step. Now, repeat step 3 below substituting all file names that end with .FXI
for the "name" shown below.
EXAMPLE: If the file is WIN.FXI in the directory listing then
type, DEL WIN.INI [ENTER].
3) Type, DEL "name".INI [ENTER]
Again ,for this step as well you will need to be careful not to delete any file
that was not changed. Using the directory listing from step 2 repeat step 4
below substituting all file names that end with .FXG for the "name" shown
below.
EXAMPLE: If the file is MAIN.FXG in the directory listing then
type, DEL MAIN.GRP [ENTER].
4) Type, DEL "name".GRP [ENTER]
Follow the next two steps to complete the process of restoring the WINDOWS
configuration to the way it was before the PBFIX utility was used.
5) Type, REN *.FXI *.INI [ENTER]
6) Type, REN *.FXG *.GRP [ENTER]
**** PBFIX ROOT ****
The ROOT option will restore the original root directory files. This
includes the original AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files. Before this option
copies the root directory files from the C:\PBTOOLS\BACKUP sub-directory to the
to the root directory, the existing files are renamed with an *.FX_ extension.
On some systems, this will copy the JP.BAT (Jurassic Park game) file to the
root of the hard drive if the system originally had the JP.BAT in the backup
sub-directory.
If you did not wish to change the ROOT configuration you may restore your
configuration by following the steps below:
(Words in brackets represent a key to press)
1) Type, CD\ [ENTER]
2) Type, DIR *.FX_ [ENTER]
If the files with an *.FX_ extension exist, then continue.
3) Type, DEL AUTOEXEC.BAT [ENTER]
4) Type, DEL CONFIG.SYS [ENTER]
5) Type, REN AUTOEXEC.FX_ *.BAT [ENTER]
6) Type, REN CONFIG.FX_ *.SYS [ENTER]
This will restore the ROOT directory to the way it was before the PBFIX
utility was used.
**** PBFIX PRODIGY ****
The PRODIGY option will copy the PRODIGY.INI file from the C:\PBTOOLS\BACKUP
sub-directory to the C:\PRODIGY sub-directory (only if PRODIGY was included with
the system). It will not rename any existing files.
**** PBFIX PBNAV ****
If the PACKARD BELL Navigator software was included with the system, the PBNAV
option will copy the NAVIGATE.INI, the DOCMGR.INI, and the KIDSPACE.INI files
from the C:\PBTOOLS\BACKUP sub-directory to the C:\PBNAV30\PBNEW,
C:\PBNAV30\DOCMGR, and C:\PBNAV30\KIDSPACE sub-directories (respectively). This
option will also rename these files with an .FXI extension should they already
exist.
Since the existing *.INI files are renamed, it is possible to restore the
PACKARD BELL Navigator configuration you had before you used the PBFIX utility.
If you did not wish to change the PACKARD BELL Navigator configuration you may
restore your configuration by following the steps below:
(Words in brackets represent a key to press)
1) Type, CD\PBNAV30\PBNEW [ENTER]
2) Type, DIR *.FXI [ENTER]
If the files with an *.FXI extension exist, then continue.
3) Type, DEL *.INI [ENTER]
4) Type, REN *.FXI *.INI [ENTER]
5) Repeat steps 2 - 4 in the C:\PBNAV30\KIDSPACE and
C:\PBNAV30\DOCMGR directories.
This process will restore the PACKARD BELL Navigator configuration to the way
it was before the PBFIX utility was used.
**** PBFIX DISKIMAG ****
The DISKIMAG option will restore the original program DISKIMAG.INI file and
the support library file VBRUN?00.DLL that was shipped with the system.
Before this option copies the DISKIMAG.INI file from the C:\PBTOOLS\BACKUP
sub-directory to the C:\DISKIMAG sub-directory, it will rename the existing
DISKIMAG.INI to DISKIMAG.FXI.
Since the existing DISKIMAG.INI file is renamed, it is possible to restore
this file to what you had before you used the PBFIX utility. If you
did not wish to change this file you may restore your configuration by
following the steps below:
(Words in brackets represent a key to press)
1) Type, CD\DISKIMAG [ENTER]
2) Type, DIR *.FX_ [ENTER]
If the file with an *.FX_ extension exist, then continue.
3) Type, DEL DISKIMAG.INI [ENTER]
4) Type, REN *.FX_ *.INI [ENTER]
**** PBFIX ALL ****
The ALL option executes all of the above options that are valid for the
system's original software configuration. Please read the above descriptions
of the individual options for more details on that option's function.
